Dual-Camera Barcode Detection on Both Sides of Carton Boxes

A master–slave, two-camera system that reads barcodes on both sides of carton boxes at once as they move along the production conveyor, with data shown live on the HMI.

Industry

Application

Barcode detection on both sides of carton boxes

The Application

Reliable carton identification and traceability at line speed

Consumer goods manufacturers use vision systems to automate accurate, high-speed detection of barcodes on either side of carton boxes during production, packaging and distribution.
This ensures reliable product identification, traceability and inventory management, while reducing manual intervention, minimising errors and improving operational efficiency in high-volume manufacturing environments.

Key Factors

Performance at a Glance

Both sides of every carton, read at the same time

2

Cameras working as a synchronised master / slave pair.

2 sides

Barcodes scanned on either side of the box simultaneously.

Live

Scanned data relayed to the HMI for real-time verification.

Operation

How the inspection works

The operation starts the moment a carton is detected on the conveyor line.

01

Box detected

A sensor detects the presence of a box on the conveyor line and triggers the vision system.

02

Both cameras triggered

The sensor sends the instruction to both cameras — one designated master, the other slave.

03

Synchronised scan

The master camera controls timing so both cameras scan the barcodes on either side of the box at the same time.

04

Data to the HMI

The data is relayed to the HMI screen for real-time monitoring and verification.

Final Result

Scanned data shown on the line HMI

Line HMI with the barcode scanner connected and reporting data

Technology Used

Hardware behind the inspection

Zebra FS20 Scanner

Two scanners read the barcodes on either side of the carton box.

Proximity Sensor

Detects each box on the conveyor and triggers the cameras.
