Application

Width and thickness measurement of plastic straps

The Application

Replacing manual strap checks with automated 3D measurement

In packaging and strapping applications, accurate width and thickness measurement of straps is critical. Manual inspection often leads to variations, higher rejection, and no reliable traceability.
Using a 3D vision-based setup with high-precision profile sensors, the system captures detailed strap profiles in real time and delivers consistent, automated measurements — reducing manual dependency and ensuring stable, reliable quality control across multiple strap variants.

Key Factors

Performance at a Glance

Multi-strap, multi-recipe measurement in real time

3

3D profile sensors arranged across the roller.

9

Straps inspected at the same time.

Multi-recipe

Dedicated recipes with quick changeover for each strap variant.

Operation

How the inspection works

The system measures the width and thickness of straps as they move on the roller, and handles different strap types through dedicated recipes.

01

Select the recipe

The operator selects the recipe for the strap variant and starts the cycle.

02

Scan under three profilers

Straps pass under the three 3D profile sensors; nine straps are inspected at a time.

03

Measure in real time

Detailed profile data is captured and exact width and thickness are calculated live.

04

OK / NOK decision

Values within the recipe limits are marked OK; variations or out-of-tolerance straps are marked NOK and the hooter alerts the operator immediately.

Final Result

Live thickness and width readings on the Web HMI

Web HMI views — thickness and width per strap, one view per profiler

Technology Used

Hardware behind the inspection

Cognex 3D Profile Sensors (L38-50B)

Three profile sensors capture detailed strap profiles for width and thickness calculation.

PLC HMI & Web HMI

The PLC HMI shows live measurements, recipe information, sensor status and cycle controls; each profiler also has a Web HMI view.
