AI-Based Inspection of Biscuit Bundle Wrapping on a High-Speed Line

A two-camera, AI-based vision system that checks the plastic wrap of every biscuit bundle at line speed and automatically rejects unpacked or damaged bundles before they reach the cargo boxes.

Industry

FMCG Packaging

Application

Inspection of unpack condition in biscuit bundle wrapping

The Application

Catching wrapping defects before they reach the final box

In the fast-paced FMCG sector, high-speed packaging and rigorous quality control go hand in hand. Traditional inspection methods often struggle to keep pace with modern production demands, leading to waste and compromised standards.
By integrating AI-based machine vision, every biscuit bundle is checked as it travels toward the final packing machine, minimising production loss and ensuring that only correctly wrapped products reach the consumer.

Key Factors

Performance at a Glance

Real-time inspection and rejection at line speed

2

Cameras covering each bundle from two angles.

AI

Classification of each bundle as PACK_OK or UNPACK_NG.

Live

Web-based monitoring of both camera views.

Operation

How the inspection works

Biscuit packets are wrapped in plastic and travel quickly down a high-speed conveyor toward the final packing machine, where they are placed into large cargo boxes.

01

Bundles on the line

Wrapped bundles travel down the high-speed conveyor toward the final packing machine.

02

Proximity trigger

A small proximity sensor detects each bundle and tells the cameras exactly when to capture.

03

Two-camera inspection

The cameras check every bundle for wrapping defects, and the result is sent to the central control panel.

04

Automatic rejection

Bundles marked NG (Not Good) activate a side conveyor that pushes the defective bundle off the line.

Final Result

Good and defective bundles, classified live

Defective wrap flagged UNPACK_NG (left); good bundle PACK_OK (right)

Technology Used

Hardware behind the inspection

Cognex IS8900 & IS2800 Cameras

Two cameras capture each bundle for AI-based wrap classification.

White Bar Light

Provides stable, controlled illumination of the bundle on the conveyor.

C-mount 8 mm & 12 mm Lenses

Lenses matched to each camera’s field of view.
